I found your interesting blog on the net about heist and caper films of the 1960s and 70s. I'm sorry if it's off-topic, but my question is: do you know in which films the idea of bank safes behind paintings were made popular? I imagine there are Hollywood films and I wonder about Sherlock Holmes but if you have any solid leads I'd be very grateful as I'm trying to write something about it.

I really do not know where the safe behind the painting came from. Sherlock Holmes sounds like a good lead, though.
I am curious to hear more about your writing project. Though I have been very VERY lax in blogging - at the rate of two posts per year and checking this site :) - I do enjoy heist and caper flicks, so keep me posted about your project, as it sounds interesting!
Was glad to hear that Kaleidoscope and The Anderson Tapes were being released on DVD, which might be of interest to you as well. cheers,
